2014 Financial Institution Recipient

VeteransPlus Honors Capital One With Financial Institutions Supporting Heroes (F.I.S.H.) Award

Houston, Texas – Capital One, an organization that values the service of veterans through employment and participation in national and local partnerships, job fairs, career conferences and sponsorships focused on improving the lives of those who have served has been named the winner of the 2014 F.I.S.H Award.

VeteransPlus, a 501 (C)(3) financial capability organization serving military members and Veterans, established the annual “Financial Institutions in Support of Heroes” (F.I.S.H) award to recognize organizations that help foster financial literacy among military personnel and Veterans. The F.I.S.H. Award takes its inspiration from the Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime“. This adage reflects the VeteransPlus mission to provide a lifetime of financial wellness.

Capital One was nominated for the annual F.I.S.H award by scores of veterans, service members and their families who engage VeteransPlus and other non-profit organizations through the Yellow Ribbon Network (YRRN). After the nominations were announced, voters around the world were encouraged to log on to the F.I.S.H Award website (The FISH Award) and vote for one of four nominated financial institutions. After thousands of votes were collected during the first quarter of 2014, Capital One received more than 33% of the total votes cast.

“On behalf of everyone at Capital One, we are honored to receive the F.I.S.H. award. We appreciate this special recognition for our efforts,” said Dave LaGassa, Managing Vice President of Financial Services and former U.S. Navy Submarine Officer. “It is our privilege to work with great partner organizations – including VeteransPlus. We share a common focus on improving the health and well-being of those who served. Through our combined efforts and expertise, we can continue making significant strides to help our nation’s veterans succeed for years to come.”

VeteransPlus Executive Director, John E. Pickens, said, “We at VeteransPlus have a strong commitment to improving financial wellness among the military and Veteran population. We also believe that all forms of support to these Heroes should integrate financial literacy in order to be successful. Capital One has displayed tremendous support for Veterans through their workforce development program and we are proud to present the 2014 F.I.S.H award to an organization that has been voted outstanding by the population they serve.”
